The Vocational Pathway Offer

The Vocational Pathway Team supports Key Stage 4 students who would benefit from an alternative curriculum rather than a traditional mainstream school offer. We work closely with a range of specialist education and training providers across Hull and the East Riding that enable  us to create a personalised and bespoke education package that meets each student’s individual needs and interests.

Learning Mentors

Every student on a Vocational Pathway will have an allocated Learning Mentor who provides ongoing guidance, encouragement and support throughout their placement.

Learning Mentors work closely with students, families, vocational providers and external agencies to ensure that each student receives the appropriate support and that they remains focused and engaged within the providers.

Through regular communication and personalised support, Learning Mentors help students to overcome barriers, celebrate their achievements and make positive progress towards their next steps and future success.

Vocational Pathway – Admissions and Referral Process

All admissions to the Vocational Pathway will come directly through the Vocational Pathway Team at The Hub School. Referrals must be made through the student’s mainstream school or, for students with an EHCP, through the Local Authority.

Referral Process

All schools must complete a Vocational Pathway referral form before any decisions are made by The Hub School. This ensures that the pathway is appropriate and that the individual student’s needs can be fully considered.

Following receipt of the referral, members of the Vocational Pathway Team will meet with the student, parent/carer and relevant professionals to gather further information. This will provide an opportunity to understand the student’s individual needs, interests, preferences and aspirations.

The Vocational Pathway Team will then consider which provider is most suitable for the individual student. Decisions will be based on:

  • The individual needs of the student
  • The student’s preferences and interests
  • The suitability of the available providers
  • Provider availability and capacity
  • Information gathered from the student, family and professionals

Provider Visits

Before a student starts a Vocational Pathway placement, visits to both potential providers must take place. The visit will be attended by The student, The student’s Learning Mentor and Parent/carer.

This will allow student and parent / carer to gain a better understanding of the provision and make sure that the proposed placement is appropriate.

Six-Week Trial Period

Non-EHCP: Once a student starts on a Vocational Pathway, there will be an initial six-week trial period. This will provide an opportunity to assess whether the placement is able to meet the needs of the student and whether it is the most appropriate pathway.

During this period The Hub School will provide feedback  to parents / carers and professional on all positives and any concerns that may need to be addressed.

After a successful trail all non-EHCP students in Year 10, students will transfer onto The Hub School roll and for non-EHCP students in Year 11, students will remain dual registered between their mainstream school and The Hub School.

Pastoral Care

Pastoral care for students on an off-site vocational pathway is provided by staff within each setting and one of a team of Learning Mentors from the Hub School. The Learning Mentors have regular contact with students throughout their placements and are the principal contact between school and home. The Learning Mentors work closely with parents, providers and external agencies to provide the best possible support.
