At The Hub School, our Mathematics curriculum provides an ambitious, inclusive and adaptive education for students in Years 5–11 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Structured using the White Rose Maths framework, it delivers a coherent sequence of learning while allowing teaching to be adapted to meet individual needs. We aim to ensure that every student, regardless of their starting point, develops the knowledge, skills and confidence to achieve their full potential in Mathematics.
We recognise that positive relationships are fundamental to successful learning. Through consistent relational practice and predictable classroom routines, we create a safe and supportive environment where students feel secure, engaged and ready to learn. This enables them to develop confidence, resilience and independence.
Teaching follows the White Rose Maths framework while remaining responsive to individual need through ongoing formative assessment. Lessons use a concrete–pictorial–abstract (CPA) approach, alongside manipulatives, visual representations and appropriate scaffolding, to develop secure conceptual understanding. As students become more confident, support is gradually withdrawn, enabling them to reason mathematically, solve problems independently and build fluency.
Our teaching gives equal importance to fluency, reasoning and problem-solving through engaging, practical activities that encourage students to explain their thinking and apply mathematics in a range of contexts. We maintain high expectations for all learners, providing the appropriate support and challenge to ensure every student makes strong progress from their individual starting points.
Wherever possible, learning is linked to real-life contexts, helping students understand the relevance of Mathematics and develop the functional skills needed beyond the classroom. Students leave The Hub School with secure mathematical knowledge, positive attitudes towards learning and the confidence to apply their skills in everyday life, further education and employment.
Our aim is for every student to work towards the mathematics qualification that best supports their strengths, aspirations and future pathway. Students can access a range of qualifications, including Entry Level Certificates, Functional Skills and GCSE Mathematics, ensuring they leave The Hub School with meaningful and recognised qualifications that prepare them for their next steps.
