Our KS3 curriculum in Design and Technology (Textiles) delivers learning that gives young people a varied breadth and depth of subject knowledge, core skills and a technical understanding which aids their personal development and provides every child with the opportunity to achieve whilst gaining life-long learning experiences. Students will acquire knowledge that gives them a strong understanding of the world around them and our heritage as a design and manufacturing nation. Students will not only obtain knowledge, but also develop understanding whilst practicing skills that gives them a sense of achievement.

Students will explore a wide range of media, techniques, and processes; using sketchbooks to record, design and support creativity. Practical skills will be developed through applied knowledge; skills integrated into activities to enable students to create visual, tactile, and digital artifacts. This will develop an increasing control of fine/gross motor skills as well as increase their proficiency and confidence in the handling of varied materials creating 2d and 3d outcomes.

Students will explore critical and contextual studies as well as developing their knowledge and understanding of the history of Design and Technology. Looking at Western, non-western, and other cultural traditions (Day of the Dead, Japanese Kawaii and Koinobori Streamers, British Traditions). They will also become more eco conscious through studying the project ‘Festival vibes’ where sustainability and upcycling are dominant. Students will be able to explore the impacts of environmental issues such as pollution and fast fashion linked to climate change, they will understand how D&T is at the forefront of environmental consciousness and look towards a better future for our planet.

Within a range of projects students will explore the work of a diverse range of artists and designers such as Orla Kiely, Graffiti Artists such as Banksy and Keith Haring and textiles designer Victoria Villasana which will inform their designing and making activities. Students will develop their vocabulary and subject specific terminology as well as using visual language to critically analyse the work of studied artists and designers.

In terms of creativity, students will develop and apply original, imaginative, and inventive ideas. They will design and make with specific clients in mind to ensure a functional prototype. This will prepare students for the studying of GCSE Art & Design Textiles.

Students will develop their critical and creative thinking skills such as; encouragement to use creative thinking to inform action, to be resourceful, resilient, and reflective. These skills will support students to work with a growth mindset informing conscious improvement of learning and outcomes.

Through studying projects, students learning will be organised through tasks and contextual information, this will then determine the knowledge and skills to be acquired/developed/ gained. Students will be supported to take ownership of their own learning and further develop their own understanding of design and manufacturing in everyday products.

Students design and make prototypes and products that solve real life problems within a variety of contexts, considering both their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Everything around us has been designed, the clothes we wear, the technology we use, the buildings around us, the food we eat, the media we view. Design and Technology is a way of doing things logically, it is a way of thinking creatively and applying what students learn for their future pathways to their careers and professions. We encourage students to take risks in their design approaches and aim to develop resourceful, innovative, and enterprising young learners who can go on to be the next generation of creative thinkers, designers, and practitioners. D&T allows curiosity, inspiration, imagination, and motivation, leading to further study and careers in a range of sectors and is a rigorous, challenging subject that builds a bridge between the academic learning and application.

Connections to future pathways

Technology connects to a range of future pathways, including GCSEs in Art & Design (Textiles, Art, Craft & Design, or 3D Design), Learning in textiles links to a range of careers in the textile and fashion industry, including fashion and interior design and branding. Through the evaluation of products, their own work, and the work of prominent practitioners within the chosen specialism, they will develop a critical understanding of the impact of Design and Technology on society and the wider world.
